A back-and-forth rivalry contest between Bishop Lynch and Nolan Catholic saw the host Friars with one final chance for a potential game-winning play Friday. Unfortunately, that pass was picked off in the end zone as time expired, giving the Vikings a 27-23 win over Bishop Lynch (4-5, 2-4) in a thrilling district contest at Roffino Stadium.
The two teams traded scores three times before sophomore Carson Garrett gave the Friars a 23-20 lead with a 26-yard field goal in the fourth period.
Nolan (3-6, 2-4) drove the length of the field to regain the lead for good with a little more than a minute to play and then held off the Friars, who came within 15 yards of winning the game before Jagger LaRoe's last-second pass was intercepted.
Nolan quarterback Luke Macias (272 passing yards) hooked up with Draylon Roberson (8-115) on all three of his touchdown passes, while Rory Mitchell rushed for 101 yards and another score.
Bishop Lynch senior Jermaine Mask led all rushers with 140 yards on 20 carries, most of which saw Mask break at least one tackle to gain extra yards.
The Friars will close out the regular season Friday with a trip to Parish Episcopal School to take on the Panthers on their blue turf. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
