Special teams set early tone for Friars during win at Parish

The second of Jarek Broussard's touchdowns gave Bishop Lynch the lead for good with just 46 seconds to play after the special teams unit had performed at its peak early in a 40-35 win at Parish Episcopal on Friday.

With the win, Bishop Lynch (5-5) jumped over Nolan Catholic into the district's sixth spot, setting up a playoff matchup at St. Thomas Catholic School in Houston. BL will face the host Eagles (5-5) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Friars were outgained by almost 200 yards while Parish controlled the ball, running 20 more offensive plays. But, the Friars used momentum-shifting plays to turn the tide in their favor.

Carson Garrett opened the game with a career-best 42-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead, then eclipsed that mark with a 43-yard kick less than three minutes later to double the advantage.

Parish scored its first points midway through the opening frame to grab its first lead at 7-6, but the kick return unit struck back as Jack Bradley fielded an attempted onside kick and raced 53 yards for his first varsity touchdown, giving BL's special teams the Friars' first 13 points of the night.

Jermaine Mask scored from eight yards out to give the Friars a 20-14 lead at the half, and BL led by 13 on two separate occasions in the third with a short TD run by Jaire Moore, and Broussard's 39-yard catch and run from Jagger LaRoe.

In front of its home crowd, Parish roared back with consecutive touchdowns to take its final lead at 35-34 with just five minutes to play, which was just enough time for the Friars.

The game-winning drive started back at the BL 26 and included a 19-yard run by Moore, passes of 13 and 15 yards from LaRoe to Broussard, a 12-yard run by Broussard, and — on third and goal from the Parish 2 — the junior's game-winning run, aided by an offensive line that dominated the Parish defensive front on the final possession.

The Friars missed the conversion attempt, but the defense ensured the Panthers would not pull off any sort of last-second miracle, and shut down Parish on downs at midfield.
