Friar defense put clamps on in second half for playoff win

St. Thomas fans were on their feet when the Eagles stormed out of halftime and took a two-point lead. Unfortunately for them, it would be the last time they had anything to cheer for.

Bishop Lynch (6-5) scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to put away the host St. Thomas 42-23 in a TAPPS Division I area playoff game Saturday in Houston.

The win set up a regional playoff matchup this weekend in San Antonio against St. Joseph, which defeated Nolan Catholic on the same day.

The Friars held a 21-17 halftime lead on the strength of three Jaire Moore touchdown runs, but saw that lead quickly vanish when St. Thomas (5-6) took the kickoff and ran through the heart of the defense. Keion McGee blocked the PAT but the Eagles held a 23-21 lead – the last time St. Thomas would play from in front.

The Friars answered with a drive chewing more than nine minutes off the clock to take a 28-23 lead on Jarek Broussard's first of three scoring runs in the second half.

Broussard gave BL the lead for good with a 3-yard TD run, then sprinted 56 yards for a score early in the fourth and put the ribbon on the package with a 5-yard run with less than a minute to play.

The defense put the hammer down in the second half and finished the game with 12 tackles for loss, five sacks and two forced turnovers.

Grayson Murphy, Davis Peck, Chris Sigsbee, Michael Menditto and Gabriel Murphy each registered a sack, Peck picked off a pass and Jeremy Harris recovered a fumble.

In addition to his three touchdowns, Broussard accounted for 232 all-purpose yards (93 rushing, 93 return, 46 receiving). Moore rushed for a team-high 110 yards. Jagger LaRoe passed for 102 yards and rushed for 27 more.

Grayson Murphy (13), Landry Kershaw (12) and Daniel Packard (11) each totaled double-digit tackles.

The Friars will take on St. Joseph (9-2) on Saturday at Harlandale's Memorial Stadium in San Antonio. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
