HEWITT — A touchdown pass with less than 45 seconds to play put Bishop Dunne ahead Friday night and lifted the rival Falcons to a 13-9 win over Bishop Lynch in the TAPPS D1 state championship game at Midway ISD's Panther Stadium.
The two teams battled each other, as well as the weather on a cold, windy and extremely rainy night that saw both teams struggle to keep a firm grip on the ball.
The Friars (8-5) fumbled twice with the ball in the red zone, ending potential scoring opportunities. They also missed an extra point and a field goal, leaving a total of 16 potential points on the field.
Dunne (11-3) held the Friars to a season-low 102 yards to help overcome four turnovers, including a crucial interception late in the fourth.
Charles Crawford scored his 29th rushing touchdown of the season for the Friars' only trip to the end zone. However, the explosive junior was held to just 24 yards on 21 carries.
The Bishop Lynch defense forced four turnovers, sacked the Dunne quarterback five times and blocked a kick while surrendering just 198 yards. The nine points was the lowest single-game total for the Friars in the entire season.
